Central Texas has no shortage of legends, but few are as chilling as the story of the Hairy Man of Round Rock. In the second episode of Offroad X Files, we take a deep dive into the history, lore, and firsthand encounters tied to this mysterious figure said to haunt Brushy Creek.
A Legend Born on the Chisholm Trail
Round Rock, Texas, was once a bustling stop along the famous Chisholm Trail, a route used by cattle drivers in the 1800s. With weary travelers and long, lonely nights came stories — whispers of a towering, shaggy-hair-covered figure lurking in the woods, frightening passersby, and leaving behind only fear and unanswered questions.
Tales of the Hairy Man
Local lore tells of the Hairy Man terrorizing wagons, frightening horses, and sometimes chasing travelers down dirt paths. Over the decades, reports of sightings have persisted, giving rise to one of the region’s most enduring legends. Some say he’s a wild man left behind by settlers, others believe he’s Bigfoot.

A Conversation with a Local Witness
In this episode, I talk with Bill Gordon, a Round Rock farmer who had a frightening experience while checking fence lines back in 1977. His insights shed light on Bigfoot in Central Texas, migratory patterns why this legend refuses to fade and continues to capture the imagination of locals and researchers alike.

There were a few things I didn't mention in this episode. One, my father Jim Toungate, Sr. was the first to play Sam Bass in the re-enactment of the famous shootout with AW Grimes and the Texas Rangers in Round Rock. Here's a picture of my dad practicing his quick draw. That's me in the red Sam Bass Trail Riding Club vest!

The second thing that I didn't mention is there were a number of reported Bigfoot sightings in Round Rock in 2017 however most of the sightings were believed to be related to a parks campaign by the city. There was one report however that drew the attention of Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) and they came to investigation. You can read the report here.
